The guinea pig, "jaca" in the Quechua language of the Huaraz region, is native and important to Peru. People love them (and that means love to eat, not to keep as a pet) or dislike them for the traditions they stand for. This makes the jaca an adequate symbol for both Peru's cultural wealth and its profound internal division.
