The parents of Matt Lorenz traveled through Peru in the 1980's to find an
alternative cure for a supposedly incurable cancer. Their trip took
a dramatic turn when they got entangled in the Maoist movement
that gained power in the central Peruvian Andes. According to the
report of the local authorities they got abducted and killed by terrorists
while on a climbing expedition. The killers were never caught.
Twenty years later, Matt works in New York with Peruvian immigrants
who are breeding guinea pigs to grill at BBQ parties. They listen to the
exotic huayno music of singer Sonia Morales. Matt's mother had met
the singer just before she was killed.
Matt overcomes his fear and travels to Peru to look for the singer
Sonia Morales and the shamans that treated his mother's illness.
He recreates his parents' trip while experiencing traditional healing
practices in the Andean mountain range and on the Pa
cific coast.
In the Amazon jungle he is introduced to medicinal ayahuasca, and under
dramatic circumstances runs into the now hugely popular Sonia Morales.
As his investigation approaches a spectacular climax, the truth about
his parents' politicized death comes as a shock.
